Bay Engineering Supplies, a division of MI Motion, has recently upgraded their workshop capabilities with a custom spray booth designed, manufactured, and installed by the team at Egmont Air. This enhancement significantly improves operations at their Mt Maunganui facility.

About MI Motion & Bay Engineering Supplies

MI Motion is committed to keeping their customers in motion, every day of the year. For more than 100 years, they have been a fixture in the New Zealand industrial landscape, delivering a world-class customer-first approach that has firmly established their business as a market leader in industrial products, solutions, and services.

Bay Engineering Supplies, a division of MI Motion, is a national distributor of industrial consumables, bearings and power transmission equipment, industrial hose & fittings, and PPE. Their workshops offer end-to-end design, production, and remediation capabilities, with engineering and design expertise that ranks amongst the best in New Zealand.

The workshop specialises in the refurbishment of cycloidal gearboxes—unique mechanical components that convert input rotation into reduced output rotation. These precision devices use an eccentrically rotating disc with a cycloidal (curved) profile that engages with pins or rollers on the housing.

What makes cycloidal gearboxes special is their exceptional combination of precision, compact design, and robust performance. They deliver high torque capacity with minimal backlash, making them ideal for applications requiring accurate positioning and control. Their durability and ability to handle shock loads makes them valuable components in robotics, industrial machinery, and precision conveyor systems.

The Challenge

Refurbishing precision components like cycloidal gearboxes requires meticulous attention to detail, especially during the painting process. Without proper equipment, workshops face issues with overspray contamination, inconsistent finishes, and potential health and safety concerns. The need to handle heavy components during painting added another layer of complexity to Bay Engineering Supplies’ operations.

The Solution

Custom Spray Booth

Egmont Air designed a custom open face spray booth featuring a specialised canopy with a crane slot to accommodate the painting of heavy parts. This thoughtful design enables technicians to manoeuvre large gearboxes easily while maintaining a controlled spray environment.

The spray booth system provides:

  • Safe capture of sticky overspray
  • High ventilation to protect operators’ breathing zones from harmful gases
  • Compliance with spray-booth legislation and facilitation of safe operating procedures

The open-face booth features modular design with galvanised-steel panel construction, a filter-plenum-wall including extraction fan, modular ducting system, and vertical discharge cowl. It draws in 100% fresh air from the front to provide laminar flow through the spraying area, with ambient air drawn from the factory and discharged through the filtration-wall, plenum, and vertically to atmosphere above roof level.

Dale Rich, Workshop Senior Technician at MI Motion, is thoroughly pleased with the new installation:

“Really happy with the Egmont Air Spray-booth! It works really well. The spray booth has been a game-changer for us. The front canopy is excellent with a slot for the crane, and it collects all the over-spray, keeps the workshop clean and is fully compliant with health and safety requirements. The lighting is so much better than what we had before, which really helps when we’re doing detailed work.”

Safety Features

The system includes comprehensive safety controls:

  • Start-up & shut-down sequence pre-purge
  • Airflow monitoring of fans
  • Spray interlock
  • Motor overload protection
  • Lighting controls
  • Status/Mode indication

Additionally, Egmont Air provided a site-specific hazardous zone area drawing according to AS/NZ Spraybooth Standards, defining the designated spray-painting area, vapour path extensions, and considerations for ignition-sources. This critical safety measure ensures all potential ignition sources are either properly rated for the environment or removed/isolated during the spraying process, helping prevent fire hazards in an area where flammable vapours are present.

Sarah Hansen, Workshop Technician at MI Motion, loves the new spray booth:

“I love that I can use the crane to bring heavy products inside the spray booth. It used to be such a pain trying to get the heavier pieces into position! And at the end of the day, I’m not covered in overspray anymore – it catches pretty much everything. Definitely makes my job a whole lot easier.”

Comprehensive Support and Certification

As part of the spray booth installation, Egmont Air provided:

  • Electrical dossier containing data on electrical equipment supplied
  • Hazardous area plan
  • Operating and maintenance instructions
  • Staff training on function and maintenance of booth
  • Certification by Egmont Air
  • Certification by IQP Independent Inspector
  • 12-month industrial warranty
