Betteridge Engineering knows a thing or two about structural steel. Since 1976, they’ve built a strong reputation as experts in structural engineering and fabrication, serving both residential and commercial clients across the Wellington region. Recognising the importance of protecting his employees and compliance with health and safety regulations, Paul Betteridge, General Manager of Betteridge Engineering recently installed a new Egmont Air welding fume extraction system.
Betteridge Engineering’s lead welder, Maeli, suffered from aneurysms which then resulted in cranium swelling when he was welding for long periods. Maeli is pretty happy with the new system, he comments “I used to have a lot of health issues which impacted my welding but with the new Egmont Air system I can weld all day!”
Welding fumes are a serious concern, as they produce micron particles of toxic metal oxides and gases that can pose severe health risks to workers. These include respiratory issues and long-term lung damage, with conditions such as chemical pneumonitis, metal fume fever, pulmonary fibrosis, and lung cancer being potential outcomes. Since the human body struggles to eliminate these toxins, effective fume extraction isn’t just a regulatory obligation—it’s an ethical responsibility for any employer.
Cameron Prestidge – Clean-air Consultant from Egmont Air comments “We understand the critical need for effective welding fume extraction solutions to ensure a safe and compliant workplace in New Zealand. It’s essential that welding fumes are extracted before reaching the welders breathing zone but also the system must be designed in such a way that it’s easy to use, makes the production process better, and compliant with NZ WorkSafe regulations”.
With the installation of Egmont Air’s advanced welding fume extraction system, Betteridge Engineering has taken a significant step in prioritising both employee health and workplace safety. Lead welder Maeli’s positive experience highlights the direct impact of a well-designed system on worker wellbeing, enabling him to focus on his work without compromising his health. As a company known for its commitment to quality and safety, Betteridge Engineering’s investment in this system reflects a proactive approach to maintaining a compliant and safe environment. Egmont Air’s solution not only ensures compliance with NZ WorkSafe regulations but also fosters a healthier, more efficient workplace.
